Te Ara Tīrama (“we”) care about the safety, security and privacy of you when you use our website and any of our e-learning services (“our services”). Our goal is to provide a learning environment that is safe and secure.
We are committed to complying with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 (“the Act”) and any other applicable laws when collecting, using or dealing with any of your personal information. This Privacy Notice describes how we collect, hold, use, disclose and maintain your personal information. It also describes your rights in relation to your personal information.

For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information. Not with some social engagements within the network (eg. comments), the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
We will keep your information while you are an active user of our services and we may keep it for up to 3 years to enable you to reactivate your account and access your learning history. We regularly review our information retention rules to make sure we are not keeping it for longer than we need to, but you can ask us to remove your information at any time.
If your account remains inactive for a period of 3 years we will delete your account and anonymise or delete your learning data so that it can only be used in a non-identifying manner to improve our products. You may notify us that you no longer require us to retain past learning data before this 3 year period has passed, in which case we will take this action sooner.
We may store personal information that we collect:
We have in place reasonable security safeguards to protect your personal information from loss, unauthorised access, use, modification, disclosure or other misuse as required by the Act.
While we do our best to keep your personal information safe and private by following high standards, no security and safety system is 100% secure. You have to play your part in ensuring that your username and password are kept safe, and tell us when your account has been accessed without permission.
Under the Privacy Act, you have a right to request access to and correct any of your personal information if you think it is wrong. You have the right to ask us to:
● give you a copy of your personal information that we have collected

If there is a reason under applicable law for us not to comply with your request, we will notify you in writing setting out the reasons for the refusal (except to the extent it would be unreasonable or unlawful to do so) and advise you of the mechanisms available to you to complain about our response.
If you think we are not doing a good job with your personal information, you also have the right to make a complaint. We will endeavour to resolve any issues as soon as practicable. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can make a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at www.privacy.org.nz.
